Unscathed Amidst Hawaii's Worst Wildfire 'The Secret of the Red Roof House'

Resilient Home's Survival Tactics Revealed Amidst Devastating Maui Island Blaze

Amidst the havoc wreaked by the worst wildfire in Maui's history, a solitary house with a distinctive red roof has captured attention for defying the inferno's wrath. The house's remarkable survival can be attributed to a crucial decision to modify its roofing and siding materials, enabling it to resist the fire's destructive reach.

The owners of the red roof house, Trip Millican and Dora Atwater Millican, were away on a trip to Massachusetts when the fire broke out. Their absence proved fortunate, allowing them to escape the blaze's danger. Despite rumors of the entire neighborhood being at risk, a photograph taken from above Maui Island showed the house untouched, prompting some to compare it to a photoshopped image.

Originally a century-old wooden structure, the Millicans transformed the house over the past two years by replacing its asphalt roof with a metal one and clearing the surrounding trees and undergrowth to deter pests. Little did they know that these measures would naturally shield the house from a wildfire.

Dora Millican recounted, "Burning tree debris was flying and hitting the roof. If we still had the old asphalt roof or vegetation around the house, the fire might have caught." With a considerable distance from neighboring houses and a location surrounded by the sea, roads, and parks, the house's positioning likely played a vital role in its preservation.

The recent Lahaina fire spread due to gusty winds carrying burning tree fragments, igniting fires in various areas. The meticulous elimination of combustible materials around the house proved to be a pivotal factor in preventing the fire's spread.

Speculation arose about the potential role of sprinkler systems, but power outages caused them to be inoperable during the fire.

As safety permits, the Millicans plan to return to Lahaina and offer shelter to those who lost their homes.

Dora Millican emphasized, "With so many lives lost and everything gone, we must look out for each other and join hands in rebuilding."
